At our core, every decision choose we make is guided by a commitment to the long-term success and well-being of our students. We have seen that students thrive and move closer to true academic independence when lessons are designed to both challenge their cognitive growth and provide a welcoming, non-judgmental classroom environment. This approach invites students to take academic risks without fear, encouraging them to explore new ideas with confidqence. Over time, this nurtures self-motivated curiosity and a genuine appetite for learning—setting the foundation for lifelong academic growth.
we take great care in all aspects of how lessons are received, as the balance of presenting intellectually
challenging instruction without resorting to admonition or judgement is crucial for these types of changes to develop over time. We promise that the teacher will always use an alternative approach to explain a concept, never placing the burden on the student to master a new idea from a single explanation.
During our first summer working with students, in 2011 , we partnered with a University of California
campus’ writing lab, which formed the underlying structure of how we approach “Writing as a Process” for all our students who have been introduced to essay assignments. For reading, we are dedicated to providing evidence based programs as well, following literacy and reading fluency programs adapted from the evidence based Seeing Stars program. For mathematics, we have found methods adapted from MITcoursware , such as use of analogies, to make tasks such as visualizing number systems for counting make more sense to younger students. Even ancient stories about fractions, like Zenos Paradox, have proven easier for our 4th graders to picture than theoften dry textbook explanations for ”taking fractions of fractions”.
